Xeric and stylish gardening in San Antonio, Texas

A hell-strip that can take the heat!

I have been noticing a lot of beautiful hell-strip plantings around San Antonio lately, and lucky for me, my friends are one of them and allowed me to take pictures today.  Thank you to Daniel and Jennifer.

These red yuccas (Hesperaloe parviflora) will laugh at the Texas heat, reflected from the pavement at that, and thrive all summer!

I love the modern simplicity of the design, and the functionality.  When cars park, people stepping out onto the granite are not going to phase these plants.  Now this is what I call a XERICSTYLE planting…stylish and Texas tough!

In addition to the hell-strip pictures, I had to show off my friend’s little combo of a bottle brush tree (Callistemon rigidus) and a firecracker fern (Russelia equisetiformis) at its feet.  The reds are particularly vibrant together.

What are some of your favorite plants for hell-strips, or otherwise?

Oooooh I love the Red Yucca’s laughing at the Texas heat! Turns out our new home in Portland (which you all will need to visit) has 3 yucca’s in the backyard. It’s like the home could smell the Texan in me!

    • That is so cool J – y’all were sooooo meant to have that house. I can’t wait to see your gardens develop. I am not surprised you responded to a post about spiky plants! ;) I would love to know more how this Texas staple does for y’all in the pacific northwest….please. Be well and happy gardening – xericstyle xo

  2. That is a nice landscape with good spacing on the hesperaloe and I also like the callistemon/russelia combo.

    • They sure do have a beautiful look out there – I have been noticing a lot of great combos in North Central San Antonio lately! Thanks Shirley – xericstyle :)
