Opuntias gone wild!

My Spineless Prickly Pear Cacti  (Opuntia engelmannii var subarmata) are at it again sprouting new pads!  Is this normal????  Y’all… I have never fertilized these, not when I planted them, and not since.  It is bizarre to me as I do not see other ones around here sprouting new pads right now.  I started these as single pads in the summer.  I am thinking in a year they will be beasts!  If you want a particularly hardy, spineless, and prolific opuntia, it appears this is the one for you!  It is the one for me.

  1. We’ve had quite mild weather and some of my newer cactus put on new growth this fall. They don’t like fertilizer so it’s good you didn’t add any. That one will get large and it looks like you gave it plenty of room.

    • That is good to hear – thanks Shirley. I don’t fertilize any of my cactus either, they seem to be really happy in their location. My plan/design is for them to bisect my large front bed with cactus mountains! Seems at this rate, it could be sooner than I thought! yay! – xericstyle

  2. That’s so exciting!!!! Just think about next season! I love watching plants grow via garden blogs :) !

    • TOTALLY!!!!!! Thanks Louis, I enjoy seeing your garden grow and change too! :) – xericstyle
